Fee to Increase Dramatically at University of Iowa

IOWA CITY, IA – With construction of a new $69.2 million campus recreation and wellness center set to begin Oct. 19 at the University of Iowa, the school’s student activity fee will jump from $4 annually to $219 for the fall 2009 semester.

The fee will apply to all University of Iowa students and will allow them access to the new center, according to the Daily Iowan. The increased fee will help pay for the construction of the center as well as staff salaries.

By comparison, Iowa State University students pay an annual fee of $37 to use the school’s recreational facilities, and students at the University of Northern Iowa pay about $9.30 annually, according to the Daily Iowan.

The University of Iowa’s new building, which is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2009, will include an Olympic-size swimming pool and a 55-foot rock climbing wall.
