YWCA Sponsors Fit Camp for Pre-Teens

WHITE PLAINS, NY—The YWCA of White Plains, NY, helped preteens lose 10 to 30 pounds during a three-week Fit Camp by teaching them how to change their eating habits and exercise. The campers worked out two hours per day by doing aerobic activities such as karate, swimming, spin and step. A social worker and a nutritionist discussed healthy lifestyles during the program, which is designed to emphasize fun, exercise, nutrition, education and the ability to overcome obstacles. Many of the children grew up in nutritionally weak homes and didn’t understand how to portion their food intake prior to joining the program, says Steve Dwek, the fitness director at the YWCA.
