Laptop Stolen from YMCA Contained Data on 68,000 Members
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Two laptops in a locked office at YMCA’s administration building in Providence, RI, were stolen in late May. One of the laptops contained debit card and credit card numbers as well as Social Security numbers and other personal information on 65,000 YMCA members of the Greater Providence Y, which has 10 branches in Rhode Island and Seekonk, MA, and Ys in Pawtucket, Smithfield and Woonsocket, RI. The laptop also had the names and addresses of the children in the Y’s day care programs. According to the Y, the police said a rash of laptop robberies had occurred in the neighborhood and they didn’t believe the robber(s) worked at the Y. The Y is sending letters to the members who had their personal information on the laptop to advise them to put a fraud alert on their credit files at credit bureaus and contact their banks and credit card companies.
