Indiana Y Closed Due to Bomb Threat
Fort Wayne, IN — After a bomb threat early one morning last month, administration at the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne (IN) closed its Allen County, IN, branches until 9 a.m. as a safety precaution.
At about 12:30 a.m. on July 7, Allen County Dispatch received a 911 call claiming that a bomb would detonate at a Y at 8 a.m. The call could not be traced, but from the sound of the voice, the police believe it was a teenage male, says Toni Kayumi, director of marking and development for the Y of Greater Fort Wayne.
“Everyone knows it's summer time, and bored teenagers are out there,” Kayumi says. “Everyone assumed it was a prank, but we didn't want to take any chances. Safety comes first. The Y and the authorities acted as if it was real.”
Police and bomb-sniffing dogs were dispatched to the Y's five Allen County locations, but no bombs were found. The Y of Greater Fort Wayne decided to keep the branches closed past the morning rush as a safety precaution, according to a statement.
