Houston YW Cuts Fitness
HOUSTON — The YWCA of Houston is closing its doors on its aquatic and fitness programs. The pool and fitness center closed Aug. 31, and the YWCA plans to sell the 25-year-old building.
“We want to move back into a blighted area, back into the areas that really need us and serve those people we were designed and meant to serve,” said Sonya Norsworthy, YWCA membership director.
The Houston YWCA said the cost of running the centers topped $300,000 a year, which became too expensive for the organization. To educate the membership about the downsizing, the YWCA sent letters to 400 members.
The YWCA said it will continue operating its social programs.
