Virginia Y Needs $100,000 to Stay Open
ROANOKE, VA -- The Smith Mountain Lake YMCA in Roanoke, VA, is scrambling to raise $100,000 to remain open. After learning months ago that the siding on its recently constructed facility violated the terms of a proffer tied to the mixed-use development, a Y official had asked Franklin County’s board of supervisors to amend the proffer. However, the board denied the request, forcing the Y to replace the siding, according to The Roanoke Times.
The Y has until July 15 to replace the siding, which is estimated to cost $100,000, Franklin County Family Y branch director Lori Duffy told the newspaper.
The Smith Mountain Lake Y’s new facility opened in January 2008 and includes: a fitness and wellness center; a racquetball court; two indoor tennis courts; a group exercise studio; a multipurpose room for children's classes and community meetings; a full-length basketball court; an indoor walking track; and an outdoor recreation area with two outdoor tennis courts, a playground area and a ballfield. A one-mile-loop nature trail is scheduled to open this summer, according to the Y’s Web site.
