Schools Named Finalists in California Challenge
SACRAMENTO, CA -- Seventy-five California schools were recently named finalists in the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports’ 2008 Governor’s Challenge Competition.
Three schools statewide will receive the grand prize of a new fitness center valued at $100,000. Regional award winners will receive $5,000 for new physical activity equipment. Winners will be announced in September at a ceremony in the state capitol in Sacramento.
School finalists were chosen based on results of the Governor’s Challenge, a statewide fitness contest among K-12 schools that promotes increased physical activity and better health among California’s youth. More than 160,000 children pledged to do some form of physical activity between 30 and 60 minutes a day, three days a week for a month. In 2007, 69,000 children participated in the challenge.
