Naval Base Kitsap Spins into Shape

Silverdale, Wa — Navy Region Northwest sailors and their families participated in the fourth annual Spinvivor Spin-a-Thon captain's cup event at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Fitness and Aquatic Center in mid-December.

More than 50 sailors from 11 commands throughout the Navy's Northwest region competed in the exercise bike marathon, which began at 6 a.m. and ran until noon. The captain's cup program promotes command unity and physical readiness through healthy competition in fitness and sports.

“The purpose of this event is to build command morale and teamwork among service members,” says Lisa Bertolacci, Spin-a-Thon coordinator. “The command with the most time wins points toward the captain's cup competition. It's all about promoting fitness and having a good time together.”

One sailor, who biked for six hours, found the event to be a great way to prepare his body for future competitions.

“I enjoy challenging myself physically and staying fit through fun events like these,” says Master Chief Machinist's Mate Greg Pelton, Naval Submarine Support Center (NSSC). “It's great to see the commands come together and this also prepares me for the Iron Man challenge.”

Family members also could participate and earn captain's cup points for their sailors' command.

“Since my husband is at sea with the USS Louisiana crew, I decided to help his command out by participating in the event,” says Lisa Ragan. “This event was really fun, and I'm glad I could participate and add points toward USS Louisiana's captain's cup point roster.”

NSSC won the event by earning the most points. “I am happy to be part of a winning team, and it's great to share our comradeship,” says Religious Program Specialist 2nd Class Stacey Ruthemeyer, NSSC.
