Bill Passage Defeats PA Sales Tax
HARRISBURG, PA -- The Pennsylvania House passed a bill in mid-June that will not increase or expand the sales and use tax (SUT), which would have added a 6 percent sales tax on health and athletic club services.
“For many months, IHRSA and our members in the state of Pennsylvania have voiced our ardent opposition to the proposed sales tax on health and athletic club services as a penalty on healthy behavior,” said Helen Durkin, IHRSA’s director of Public Policy. “There is no question that physical inactivity has serious health and economic consequences, and we encouraged state legislators to send the right message to their constituents – to encourage them to make physical activity a part of their lives – not to penalize them for doing so.”
As part of an organized campaign to defeat passage of the proposed sales tax, more than 700 health conscious constituents and small business owners from across the state wrote to their representatives asking House and Senate members not to tax them for their healthy habits.
